Loss
Throughout life we often experience other types of loss that impact on our day to day lives. This may include something that is happening now such as:
- separating or divorcing from our partner
- being made redundant
- living away from family or friends
- illness/loss of health
Equally it may be something that has happened in the past that is impacting on your day to day life. This may include:
- difficult family relationships
- adverse childhood experiences such as abuse, neglect, bullying, parental separation
You may well notice some similarities with the feelings described that are associated with bereavement. If this resonates with you, then counselling may be of help to you at this time.
Loss due to Acquired Brain Injury
When a family member or someone close to you experiences an acquired brain injury, this is often a life changing event for everyone who is impacted, and the dynamics of families and relationship alter radically. Roles and responsibilities within the family can change and this can be very hard to get used to at first, both with practical tasks, as well as the emotional impact. Many of the emotions and physical reactions described in “what is grief” will be familiar when a life altering experience happens to someone close to you.
It can be hard to prioritise your own needs at this time. Taking time to look after your own well being and ensuring that you have the space and time to talk the situation through from your perspective can be helpful not only for you, but for those you are also supporting and taking care of.
Counselling will help focus on the practical and the emotional impact as well as give strategies to support you both in the short and long term.
